The presentation will introduce the English-Taught Programs of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, highlighting the University’s expanding international academic profile and its strategic commitment to attracting students from around the world. Through the AU Gateway, participants will be introduced to a broad portfolio of undergraduate and postgraduate programs designed to combine academic excellence, applied learning, research orientation, and professional development.

The session will be presented by Professor Iakovos Michailidis, Vice-Rector for International Relations, Outreach, Lifelong Learning and Student Welfare, together with Associate Professor Polychronis Antonitsis, Christos Chelmis, and Professor Nikolaos Foroglou. The presentation will offer a concise overview of AUTH’s international study opportunities, the academic environment of Thessaloniki, and the role of English-taught education in strengthening the University’s global presence.

Democratic systems have been subjected to growing pressures arising from political polarization, democratic backsliding, and declining trust in public institutions. In this context, the concept of militant democracy — understood as the right of a democratic order to defend itself against forces seeking its destruction — has regained renewed prominence. The Conference seeks to explore the evolution, justification, and limits of militant democracy, examining whether and under what conditions democratic self-defense can remain compatible with constitutionalism, pluralism, and fundamental rights. Particular attention will be paid to the role of courts, proportionality standards, procedural safeguards, and the novel challenges posed by digital disinformation, foreign interference, and authoritarian diffusion.

The University of Thessaly presents a dynamic showcase of student-led innovation, interdisciplinary research, and emerging technological initiatives developed across its engineering, biotechnology, aerospace, and digital systems communities. Bringing together academic staff, undergraduate researchers, and award-winning student teams, the event highlights how collaborative research culture and hands-on experimentation are shaping the next generation of scientific and technological innovation in Greece.

The programme features presentations from internationally active student teams and academic laboratories, including the Centaurus Racing Formula Student Team, the iGEM Thessaly synthetic biology initiative, IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) Volos, aerospace and UAV research projects developed by StarBound, as well as projects focused on embedded systems, robotics, AI-driven computational biology, avionics, and advanced engineering design. Through these initiatives, the University of Thessaly demonstrates its growing role as a hub for applied research, technological entrepreneurship, and interdisciplinary STEM education

 

 

The Hellenic Mediterranean University participates in the 1st Aristotle Innovation Forum, which will take place in Thessaloniki from 17 to 23 May 2026, under the central theme “Aristotle Meets AI.”

HMU’s participation is coordinated by the University’s Technology Transfer and Innovation Unit, which will represent the Institution in the exhibition area, at Stand 7. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about the University’s activities in the fields of research, innovation, technology transfer, and the connection of academic knowledge with the market and society.

On Thursday, 21 May 2026, at 14:00, the Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation of the Hellenic Mediterranean University, Professor Athanasios Malamos, will present the University’s research and innovation ecosystem, its strategic priorities, and its contribution to the production of new knowledge and technological solutions.

HMU’s presence at the 1st Aristotle Innovation Forum forms part of the Institution’s ongoing effort to strengthen outreach, networking, and the connection between research, innovation, and entrepreneurship. At the same time, it offers an important opportunity to showcase the work of the University’s research groups, laboratories, and institutional structures within an international environment dedicated to the exchange of ideas, expertise, and good practices.
