The University of Thessaly presents a dynamic showcase of student-led innovation, interdisciplinary research, and emerging technological initiatives developed across its engineering, biotechnology, aerospace, and digital systems communities. Bringing together academic staff, undergraduate researchers, and award-winning student teams, the event highlights how collaborative research culture and hands-on experimentation are shaping the next generation of scientific and technological innovation in Greece.

The programme features presentations from internationally active student teams and academic laboratories, including the Centaurus Racing Formula Student Team, the iGEM Thessaly synthetic biology initiative, IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) Volos, aerospace and UAV research projects developed by StarBound, as well as projects focused on embedded systems, robotics, AI-driven computational biology, avionics, and advanced engineering design. Through these initiatives, the University of Thessaly demonstrates its growing role as a hub for applied research, technological entrepreneurship, and interdisciplinary STEM education

  • Elpida Makri
    Elpida Makri
    Undergraduate Student

    Elpida Makri is an undergraduate (3th-year) student in the Mechanical Engineering Department of the University of Thessaly. She is member of the Centaurus Racing Formula Student Team (CRT) of the University of Thessaly since 2024, working in the Mechanical Design sub-team, on the design of the suspension and drivetrain parts and conducting numerical simulations with finite element analysis. Since 2025 she is leader of the Mechanical Design Group in the CRT, supervising its tasks and activities. She has a Proficiency Certificate in English language and her skills include strong knowledge of Solidworks software.

    Spyros Rizos
    Undergraduate Student

    Spyros Rizos is an undergraduate (5th-year) student in the Electrical & Computer Engineering Department of the University of Thessaly. He is member of the Centaurus Racing Formula Student Team of the University of Thessaly since 2023. working in the suspension sub-team, on tire performance analysis and torque vectoring strategies. Since 2025, he is the Centaurus Racing Team Leader, supervising project activities and results and guiding cross-functional collaboration. He has a Proficiency Certificate in English language and his other skills include knowledge of MATLAB software and C programming.

    Alexis Kermanidis
    Professor in the Laboratory of Mechanics and Strength of Materials (LMSM), Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Thessaly (UTH)

    Professor in the Laboratory of Mechanics and Strength of Materials (LMSM), Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Thessaly (UTH), in the field of Mechanical Behaviour of Metallic Materials. He has a Diploma in Civil Engineering from the University of Patras (1996), and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Aeronautics of the University of Patras (2003). He has participated in 17 European and National research projects since 1997, three of them as Scientific Coordinator. He is author of more than 75 publications in scientific journals, and Conferences, as well as author of 3 chapters in books and supervisor of 4 PhD and 7 MSc Theses in the Department of Mechanical Engineering of UTH. He has been a scientific committee member in 7 International Conferences, organizer of 2 international Conferences and 1 International Workshop and has acted as member of the Evaluation Committee of research Proposals for the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation. From 2009 he is Scientific Advisor of the Centaurus Racing Team, a student research team that has acquired multiple first positions (2011, 2013, 2018, 2024) in various events of the international Formula Student (FSAE) student competition.

    Head of Dry Lab of iGEM Thessaly

    Andreas Laganis is an undergraduate (4th-year) student in the Digital Systems Department of the University of Thessaly. He is a member of the undergraduate research iGEM team of the University of Thessaly since 2026, serving as Head of Dry Lab, with a focus on computationally-guided protein design and biological modelling. His work involves the application of AI-driven structural biology tools for de novo protein generation, as well as the development and oversight of the team’s software pipelines. Since 2025, he manages the department’s AI student team and oversees its AI/ML compute infrastructure, coordinating resource allocation and supporting machine learning workflows across various projects.

  • Anastasiou Eleftheria-Maria
    Anastasiou Eleftheria-Maria
    Team Leader of iGEM Thessaly

    Eleftheria Anastasiou is a fourth-year undergraduate student in the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology at the University of Thessaly. She has developed a strong academic foundation in molecular biology, genetics, and bioengineering, complemented by a growing interest in interdisciplinary research and synthetic biology. This year, she serves as the Team Leader of the iGEM Thessaly team, where she is responsible for coordinating all aspects of project development. Her role includes guiding the experimental design, and ensuring the meaningful integration of human practices into the overall project. She works closely with different sub-teams to maintain scientific consistency and foster collaboration across disciplines.

    I am a second-year Electrical and Computer Engineering student at AUTh. I’m also a member of the Hermes Team, where I develop the control system and model the kinematics for our robotic exoskeleton.

    Aikaterini Anastasiadou
    Student at University of Thessaly (UTH)

    I am Aikaterini Anastasiadou and I am 18 years old. I am a student at University of Thessaly (UTH) and I am studying Electrical and Computer Engineering. Also, I am an active member of WIE (Woman in Engineering) Volos since 2025 which has been a unique experience that has helped me develop in many areas such as teamwork and collaboration. I’m a reliable team player and a positive person who truly enjoys working with others while I am interested in listening to innovative ideas and meeting new people.

    My name is Eirini Mastellou and I’m 20 years old. I’m an undergraduate student of Electrical and computer engineering at the university of Thessaly. I’ve been an active member of WIE since September of 2025. It’s a great opportunity to learn to cooperate with others and accomplish your goals. In my spare time I like to be with my close people, exercise, travel and socialize. I would like to consider myself an ambitious person with a lot of interests. In the future I hope to work in the Energy sector, since I think it is extremely interesting.

  • Georgia Kantzidou
    Georgia Kantzidou
    1st year of Electrical and Computer Engineering in University of Thessaly

    Georgia Kantzidou is a first-year Electrical and Computer Engineering student at the University of Thessaly (Volos, Greece). During the 2023–2024 academic year, she participated in the FLEX program (Future Leaders Exchange) in the United States, where she actively engaged in community service, completing over 100 hours of volunteering and organizing three community service projects.
    She was also recognized for her musical achievements, receiving the Music Exemplary Award in the State of Wisconsin for piano performance, and was selected to participate in the Civic Education Workshop (CEW). In her senior year of high school, she served as a City Representative, organizing initiatives such as a Clean-Up Day, and founded the Discover Cultures Club, where she coordinated monthly online meetings with participants from different countries to explore diverse cultures.
    Most recently, she was selected to participate in the international IDEAL 2026 workshop.

Currently, I am a student at the University of Thessaly (UTH) where I am studying Mechanical Engineering.I am also an active member of WIE(Women in Engineering) Volos since 2025 which has helped me develop great teamwork and discipline. In my free time, I enjoy taking long walks in sceneries while listening to music . I consider myself a motivated individual, and my goal is to eventually work in the field of Aerospace Engineering.

I have been an active member in Wie Volos since September 2025, an experience that has significantly helped me improve my cooperation skills. In my spare time I enjoy travelling and spending quality time with my friends. I consider myself a highly motivated and ambitious individual with a deep interest in technology. Looking ahead, I hope to pursue a career in the field of embedded system, as I find the interaction between physical components and code truly fascinating

    Electrical & Computer Engineering student with strong interests in EDA, ASIC, and FPGA design

    Final-year Electrical & Computer Engineering student with strong interests in EDA, ASIC, and FPGA design.
    Experienced in VLSI design, CAD implementations, TCAD Simulations, and full ASIC flow (frontend and backend),
    with hands-on exposure to circuit robustness analysis under radiation-induced effects. Skilled in C/C++, Verilog, and
    familiar with digital design flow concepts such as STA, synthesis, CTS, floorplanning, partitioning, placement, and
    routing.
    Beyond the lab, I have dedicated the last 6 years to the IEEE student community in Volos. Currently serving as the
    Head of the IEEE WIE (Women in Engineering) Student Branch of the University of Thessaly in Volos. I previously
    spent over four years as the PR Manager for both IEEE and WIE. These roles have shaped my firm belief in gender
    equality, peace, and the power of professional friendship as catalysts for innovation.
    Additionally, I have contributed as a volunteer to numerous conferences and actively support the academic process
    as a volunteer teaching assistant for university courses. When I’m not optimizing circuits or leading team initiatives, I
    recharge through dancing, listening to music, reading books or hanging out with friends.

    Charalampos Zachariadis
    4th Year Electrical & Computer Engineering at University of Thessaly

    Charalampos Zachariadis is an Integrated Master’s student in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Thessaly. Growing up in Volos, where clear, starry nights are a common phenomenon, sparked a deep passion in him for astronomy and physics. This early fascination inspired him to bridge his engineering studies with the field of aerospace. Consequently, he founded and currently leads StarBound, a university aerospace student team. StarBound is a multidisciplinary group, and their current goal is the design and development of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to compete in the global UAS Challenge 2026. These collaborative experiences also cultivated his strong interest in teaching and academic service. As a result, he has served as an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant for multiple subjects and currently holds the position of Vice Chair at the IEEE Student Branch of Volos, a leading organization dedicated to advancing technology across academia and industry. Ultimately, his core research interests encompass avionics, embedded systems, and hardware design, driven by a passion for integrating engineering solutions into both aerospace and everyday applications

    4th year student in Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of Thessaly

    Chistos Vrakatselis is a student in Electrical and Computer Engineering and a graduate of the Musical school of Ilion. From a young age, he has a deep interest in astronomy, observing planets and nebulas through his telescope, fascinated by the harmonic nature of the planets associated with music theory. That led him to co-found StarBound, to make easier for students to access the world of aerospace. Through the knowledge acquired by the University and personal projects, StarBound has started from a UAV development to gain experience, which will be later used for more space-oriented projects. They will participate in the UAS challenge 2026 to prove their design. His research fields include PCB design, power electronics, RF electronics, embedded systems, and laser optics.

  • Leonidas Leontiadis
    Leonidas Leontiadis
    3rd Year Mechanical Engineering at University of Thessaly

    Leonidas Leontiadis leads the Aerodynamics sub-team for Starbound while pursuing his degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Thessaly. His team is currently developing a competitive UAV prototype. Having fully immersed himself in aerodynamics, Leonidas quickly mastered the core concepts. He is highly passionate about running CFD simulations and utilizing industry-standard software such as ANSYS Fluent. With a lifelong interest in aerospace, he enjoys bridging his academic coursework with collaborative brainstorming to optimize the flight performance of unmanned technology.

  • Vasileios Madesis
    Vasileios Madesis
    4th Year Electrical & Computer Engineering at University of Thessaly

    Vasileios Madesis is a 4th year Integrated Master’s student in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Thessaly, with interests in computer science, software development and open-source technologies. During his studies, he has actively contributed to the university community through involvement in several student-led organizations, and he is currently member of the ethical hacking team BrokenShells, the University of Thessaly IEEE Student Branch, and the aerospace research team Starbound, at which he serves as Head of Embedded Systems and Software.
