Caterina Gavalas Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon Director, Greek National Health System (ESY) Head of the Ophthalmology Department, General Hospital of Kos President, Medical Association of Kos Dr. Caterina Gavalas is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon and Director within the Greek National Health System (ESY), currently serving as Head of the Ophthalmology Department at the General Hospital of Kos since 2006. Born in Sassari, Italy, with origins from the island of Kalymnos, Greece, she obtained her Medical Degree and specialization in Ophthalmology from the University “G. D’Annunzio” of Chieti-Pescara, Italy. She holds a PhD in Medicine from the same University and an MSc in Pediatric Ophthalmology from the University “Cattolica del Sacro Cuore” in Rome. Her clinical expertise includes Pediatric Ophthalmology, Ocular and Orbital Ultrasonography, Refractive Surgery, and the comprehensive management of macular diseases supported by advanced diagnostic technologies. Under her leadership, the Ophthalmology Department of the General Hospital of Kos has evolved into a regional referral center serving the Dodecanese islands. Dr. Gavalas has authored scientific publications in Greek and international medical journals and has participated in numerous national and international conferences. She has also delivered academic teaching and brings extensive hospital experience from Greece and abroad. In parallel with her clinical career, she holds significant institutional roles. She currently serves as President of the Medical Association of Kos and has previously served as Vice President of the Scientific Committee of the General Hospital of Kos and President of the Association of Hospital Doctors of Kos. She actively contributes to public health dialogue and to the development of institutional frameworks at regional and national level.
