Georgios Papatheodoridis
Georgios Papatheodoridis Professor of Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology at the School of Medicine of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens Georgios Papatheodoridis is a gastroenterologist and Professor of Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology at the School of Medicine of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He graduated with honours from the School of Medicine of the University of Athens. He trained in Gastroenterology at the Tzaneio General Hospital of Piraeus and pursued further specialist training in Hepatology at the Royal Free Hospital in London. From 1999 to 2013, he served at the Second Department of Internal Medicine of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, based at Hippokration General Hospital. Since 1 September 2013, he has been Director of the University Department of Gastroenterology at Laiko General Hospital of Athens. He is also Director and Hepatologist of the Liver Transplantation Unit at Laiko General Hospital. He is President of the Hellenic Transplant Organization, the Hellenic Foundation of Gastroenterology and Nutrition, and the Hellenic Society of Gastroenterology. He has served as a member of the Governing Board and currently serves as Educational Councillor of the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL). He has also served as a member of the Hepatitis B Advisory Committee of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), as a member of the General Assembly of United European Gastroenterology, and as a founding member and Treasurer of the International Coalition to Eliminate HBV and HCV. He has served as President and/or board member of numerous Greek and international scientific societies. He has been coordinator and member of the European clinical practice guidelines for Hepatitis B in 2012 and 2017, and for Hepatitis B and D in 2023, as well as of all Greek guidelines on Hepatitis B, Hepatitis B and D, and Hepatitis C. He is Coordinator of the Viral Hepatitis Committee of the Hellenic National Public Health Organization and Chair of the Committee for the Gastroenterology Specialty Examinations in Athens. In 2023, he was honoured with the EASL Recognition Award by the European Association for the Study of the Liver. In 2025, he was elected a member of the Academia Europaea. His research output includes more than 500 articles in international journals, with a cumulative impact factor exceeding 6,200 and more than 36,000 citations in Scopus and more than 62,000 citations in Google Scholar, with an h-index of 88 and 109, respectively. He has served as Associate Editor, member of editorial boards, and reviewer for numerous international journals, conferences, and organisations. He has delivered more than 195 invited lectures, chaired more than 65 sessions, and presented more than 420 communications at international conferences, in addition to numerous lectures, chairing roles, and presentations at Greek conferences.
