Johannes Orphal
Head of Division IV "Natural and Built Environment“ at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)
Prof. Dr. Johannes Orphal is Head of Division IV „Natural and Built Environment“ at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), since 2020. He graduated in Physics at Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany, in 1991. After his PhD in 1995 at the Université de Paris-Sud (Orsay, France), he worked for 5 years as a Postdoctoral Assistent in the Institute of Environmental Physics at University of Bremen, Germany, on atmospheric remote-sensing from space. In 1999, he became CNRS researcher in Orsay, and then Full Professor of Physics at Université de Paris-Est, Créteil, in 2005. From 2009 to 2020, he was Full Professor of Physics and Director of the Institute of Meteorology and Climate Research at KIT. He is author and co-author of over 200 scientific publications, and has received prestigious international awards, most importantly the "Gay-Lussac - Humboldt" Prize of the French Académie des Sciences (Paris) in 2018.
