Antonis Tsourdalakis

President of the Association of Greek Orthodox Communities and Parishes of Victoria of the Holy Archdiocese of Australia

Antonis Tsourdalakis is the son of Sokratis (originally from Melampes, Rethymno) and Anna Tsourdalakis, (originally from Asi Gonia, Apokoronas). He was born in Melbourne in July 1970.

Raised within a deeply traditional Cretan family, Antonis received the necessary initial cultural foundations from his parents to dynamically enter the path of tradition, fostering a profound love for Greece and a devotion to Crete.

From a young age, he participated in numerous dance groups, and later as a teenager—for over fifteen years—he taught Cretan traditional dances to hundreds of young men and women.

He has been dynamically active within the Greek community of Melbourne from a very young age. In 1989, he founded and chaired the Greek Students’ Association at Victoria University. In 1990, he co-founded the Hellenic Youth Federation of Australia, which boasted over 40,000 members. Since 1994, he has participated in the Australian-Hellenic Council on national issues, and in 1995 joined the Victorian Council for the Greek National Day, which he has chaired from 2017 until 2024. Since 1995, he has attended all World Congresses of the Council of Greeks Abroad (SAE) in Thessaloniki. In 2004, he was elected to the Board of Directors of the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne, and from 2011 to 2013, he served as the General Manager of the “Antipodes” Festival.

Parallel to the above, he participates with the same zeal and special love for the Cretan element in Oceania. In 1991, he became President of the Youth of the Cretan Brotherhood of Melbourne, and in 1994, he was elected General Secretary of the Brotherhood. In 2000, from the position of President, he undertook the full reconstruction of the historic Rethymnian Association of Melbourne “ARKADI,” and in 2008, he became President of the Pancretan Association of Melbourne. In 2015, in collaboration with other community bodies, he founded the Battle of Crete Memorial Coordinating Committee of Victoria, which he chaired in 2018, 2019, and 2020.

At a national level, he has served the Cretan Federation of Australia & New Zealand since 1998 as Public Relations Officer and in 2003 as Vice President. At the 40th National Convention of Cretans of Oceania, the Cretan Associations unanimously elected him President of the Cretan Federation of Australia & New Zealand, a position he held until January 2024. It is worth noting that in 1999, he chaired the pan-Australian founding of the Cretan Youth of Australia & New Zealand.

Regarding global Cretan affairs, in 1998 he was elected 1st Vice President of the World Council of Cretan Youth. In 2003, he participated in the 4th World Convention of Cretans in Kolymbari, Chania, where—alongside representatives from the Pancretan Association of America and the Pancretan Federation of Europe—the decision was made to re-establish the World Council of Cretans. Subsequently, in 2011, he was elected President of the World Council of Cretans, serving until August 2014.

In April 2021, His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia appointed him President of the Association of Greek Orthodox Communities and Parishes of Victoria of the Holy Archdiocese of Australia, a position he holds to this day. In October 2024, His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew bestowed upon him the title of “Archon Eutaxias” of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Since June 2021, he has served on the Board of Directors of the “St. Basil’s” Aged Care Foundation of the Holy Archdiocese of Australia, and since October 2020, he has been a Board Member of the “Aetolian College” (St. Cosmas o Aitolos).

He is a graduate of Keilor Heights Secondary College and the “Aristoteleio” Greek High School in Brunswick, Victoria. He holds a degree from Victoria University in Business Administration, Accountancy, and Human Resource Management.

For the past 25 years, he has been the owner of a security and fire safety systems company. For several years, he was also active in the hospitality sector with his own functions venue, while he continues to participate dynamically in various business activities in both Greece and Australia.
His story is one of the most characteristic examples of a member of the Diaspora with a tremendous contribution to his Homeland.
He is married to Christina Papatoli, who hails from Thessaloniki, and they have two children, Anna and Parissa.
