Dr. Alexandra Touroutoglou, MSc, PhD is an Associate Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School and the Director of Imaging Operations in the Frontotemporal Disorders Unit at Mass General Hospital, Boston, USA.

In 2016 at Harvard, she discovered Superagers, a remarkable group of older adults whose brains refuse to age, known as Superagers. These older adults manage to defy the inevitable as their brains have avoided the shrinkage that typically comes with aging and look more like those of 25 year olds. Her team pioneered research to examine the inner workings of the Superaging brain and use their secrets to promote healthy aging. She is now applying what she discovered in superagers to help patients with Alzheimer’s Disease, using a brain stimulation treatment currently in clinical trials. Her goal is to delay brain aging and reduce Alzheimer’s symptoms.

Her research is funded by the US National Institute of Health. Her findings have been featured around the world, including the National Geographic, BBC, and The New York Times. In 2023, she was invited at the United Nations to present her research on Superagers to attendees from all around the world.

She has an international reputation and won numerous awards for her work, including an award from Institute of International Education/Fulbright Foundation, Woman in Science Award from The Rockefeller University, and the Anne Klibanski Award from Massachusetts General Hospital, and the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association Award for her contributions to science. Recently, she has been awarded the 2024 Rising Mentor Award in recognition of her contributions to mentoring students at Harvard during the last 10 years. In January 2025, she was appointed as Federal Advisory Scientific Committee member at the US Department of Veterans Affairs. Since 2021, she serves as the President of the Hellenic Bioscientific Association of the USA.
