Digitizing an Historical Library in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: The Joanina Library at the University of Coimbra

The Joanina Library houses a unique collection of several thousand printed books from the Early Modern era. Extending from the beginnings of typography to the end of the 18th century, this collection bears witness to the production, circulation, and organization of knowledge in that period. In addition to building a structured repository, the Joanina Digital project will provide access to all digitized content, in the form of facsimile images and text, from a collection of approximately 30,000 works that make up the Library’s Noble Floor. Digitization opens the collection to new readings and research across various disciplines, including the history of books, publishing, and libraries, as well as the history of knowledge production and circulation. The digital aggregation of the collection also enables the application of computational analysis, including the use of artificial intelligence tools.

This panel will present the Joanina Digital Project based on the following set of questions:

1) How is the large-scale digitization of a heritage library done?

1.1) How do we organize the workflow for digitizing 30,000 volumes and 18 million pages?

1.2) How do we move from bibliographic artifacts to their representation and modelling as digital artifacts?

2) For whom are we doing this large-scale digitization?

2.1) What are the uses we envision for the digital collection?

2.2.) Who will be actual users of this digital collection?

3) What is the relationship between the Joanina Library (as an architectural space for bibliographic organization) and the Joanina Digital Library (as a computational space for algorithmic modelling)?

This round table aims to provide a global perspective on this innovative project, showcasing its multiple dimensions – organizational, conceptual, technical, infrastructural, social, cognitive, and experiential.

  • Leontios J. Hadjileontiadis
    Leontios J. Hadjileontiadis
    Professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH)

    Leontios J. Hadjileontiadis, born in Kastoria, Greece in π-1966, is Professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), Greece, and Adjunct Professor at the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Biotechnology (BMBED) of Khalifa University of Science and Technology in Abu Dhabi, UAE. He studied Electrical and Computer Engineering at AUTH, where he received his Diploma in 1989 and his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 1997. His interests also extend to the arts, having completed a Ph.D. in Music Composition at the University of York, UK, in 2004, and a Diploma in Musicology at AUTH in 2011. His work focuses on biomedical signal analysis, machine learning applications in healthcare, and assistive technologies for neurological and cognitive disorders. He has published extensively in international journals and conferences, with more than 190 scientific papers and a citation record (h=60) that reflects the recognition of his contributions in these fields (https://scholar.google.gr/citations?user=OfAkcXkAAAAJ&hl=en).

    Professor Hadjileontiadis has also been active in coordinating research projects, including European collaborations with significant funding support. These projects with funding exceeding €15 million often combine engineering, healthcare, and education, aiming to provide practical solutions with societal benefit. His teaching emphasizes interdisciplinarity and application, and he has supervised numerous postgraduate students, contributing to the development of young researchers. His work has been recognized with distinctions such as the Microsoft Innovation Award in 2012, the Silver Award in Teaching Delivery at the Reimagine Education Awards in 2017–2018, and the Healthcare Research Award from the Dubai Healthcare City Authority in 2019. He is a Senior Member of IEEE and participates actively in the international academic community. He is the Director of the Signal Processing and Biomedical Technology Unit (SPBTU) at AUTH ECE.

    Beyond engineering and biomedical sciences, Professor Hadjileontiadis has explored the intersection of technology and art. He has composed more than 95 works exploring the sound from signal processing perspectives, covering biosignals, as well, integrating physiological data into musical creation, which reflects his interdisciplinary approach and interest in bridging science with artistic expression. This line of work highlights his ability to connect human experience, technology, and creativity in innovative ways.
    In summary, Leontios J. Hadjileontiadis is an academic whose career combines engineering, biomedical research, and music. His interdisciplinary background and commitment to both science and art make him a distinctive figure, engaged in advancing knowledge and exploring new forms of expression.

    Delfim Leão is Full Professor at the Center for Classical and Humanistic Studies, University of Coimbra. His main areas of interest are ancient history, law and political theory of the Greeks, theatrical pragmatics, and the ancient novel. He also has a strong interest in open science and scholarly communication. He is Vice-rector por Culture, Communication and Open Science, and a member of the Executive Assembly of OPERAS (ESFRI infrastructure), participating in European projects such as OPERAS-P, TRIPLE, OPERAS-PLUS, PALOMERA, ATRIUM, LUMEN. He heads the team responsible for developing the collaborative translation platform Mondaecus, and the Digital Joanina project.

    Senior research scientist at the Artificial Intelligence Lab at the National Library of Norway

    Javier de la Rosa is a senior research scientist at the Artificial Intelligence Lab at the National Library of Norway. A former Postdoctoral Fellow at UNED Digital Humanities Innovation Lab, he holds a PhD in Hispanic studies with a specialisation in digital humanities from the University of Western Ontario, and a Masters in artificial intelligence by the University of Seville. Javier has previously worked as a research engineer at the Stanford University Center for Interdisciplinary Digital Research, and as the Technical Lead at the University of Western Ontario CulturePlex Lab for Cultural Complexity. He is interested in natural language processing applied to historical and literary text, with a special focus on large language models.
