The claim that human thought will soon be surpassed by artificial intelligence has led to a distortion of our understanding of what it means to be human. We are conflating a biological system with a technological tool. We must therefore ask whether there are—if any—properties and capacities that constitute the distinctive features of our living nature, and what differentiates us from a machine that can play chess better than a world champion, deliver medical diagnoses more accurately than an outstanding physician, render judicial decisions more effectively than a fair and well-informed judge, or even produce a doctoral dissertation superior to that of a capable PhD candidate.
