Nikolaos Papantoniou is Emeritus Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens Greece. He is the former Chair of the 3rd Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Director of Post Graduate course: “High Risk Pregnancy”- MSc. He was born in Athens Greece on the 5th of June 1951. He has graduated from Athens College in 1970 and from the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in 1976. He has specialized in Obstetrics and Gynecology in “Alexandra” State & University Maternity Hospital and has been in the list of specialists in OBGYN since 1985.
In 1986 he has completed his PhD Thesis with distinction in Athens University. Within 1985-1986, he conducted further sub-specialization in Maternal-Fetal Medicine working as a Clinical Assistant in Hammersmith Hospital (U.K.) and he received the title of Honorary Lecturer of the University of London. From 1987 until 2013 he has been working as specialist in the 1st Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the University of Athens-Greece, at “Alexandra” State and University Maternity Hospital, where he has gradually served as Senior Registrar, Assistant Professor and Associate Professor. In 2013 he was elected Full Professor of Obstetrics – Gynecology – Maternal Fetal Medicine at Athens University School of Medicine. In 2014 he was elected Chairman of the 3rd Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Director of post graduate course: “High Risk Pregnancy” MSc and remained at this positions until 2018.For academic year 2015 -17 he was elected Director of Domain for Health of Mother and Child, administrative coordinator of 8 university clinics.
He is a member of more than 10 International Medical Societies (International Academy of Perinatal Medicine(Associate Member), International Fetoscopy Working Group, Fetus as Patient, ISUOG, MEDUOG, SEESPM et al) and 9 Greek Medical Societies (Hellenic Societies of: Obstetrics & Gynecology, Perinatal Medicine, Ultrasound in Obstetrics & Gynecology, Prenatal Diagnosis and Fetal Therapy, Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology et al.), in many of them as a founder member and member in the board of directors, such as President , v. President, and General Secretary. He has served as President in the following Hellenic Societies: Perinatal Medicine , Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics & Gynecology and Society of Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology. He is currently p.President of the South East European Society of Perinatal Medicine.
In 2023 he was elected as Regular Member of the International Academy of Perinatal Medicine and in 2024 as President of the International Hippocratic Foundation, a prestigious Institution established in 1960 next to the famous Aesculapium in the island of Kos (Greece), with the goal of spreading Hippocratic Medicine, Bioethics and healthy Diet. His clinical practice focuses on Maternal Fetal Medicine, the organization and quality of Perinatal care, the application of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology, invasive Prenatal Diagnostic and Therapeutic Procedures and Screening tests for Prenatal Diagnosis of congenital malformations and pregnancy related complications.
His research work was mainly funded by EU, the Greek state and Athens University. He is the co-founder of 1 Greek and 1 European patent. He was responsible for the European Union funded research program ARISTEIA (excellence). He has received several International and Greek awards for the advance of science. He has received the PAPANIKOLAOU AWARD from Cornel University NY (2017). In 2020 he received the SORANOS AWARD from the Southeast European Society of Perinatal Medicine and in 2021 the HIPPOCRATES from Lenox Hill Hospital and the Federation of Greek Physicians of N. America.
Prof. N. Papantoniou is the author and co-author of 173 publications in International and of 62 in Hellenic peer reviewed journals (5924 citations, h-index: 35 ).
He is author / co-author of 11 chapters in International and 18 chapters in Greek medical textbooks. He is co-Editor in OBSTETRICS & GYNECOLOGY (2016), the official textbook of the Athens Medical School. He is the Editor of the translation in Greek of the book “Gynecologic and Obstetric Surgery”: Challenges and Management Options “Edt John Wiley 2016.
During his academic career he has supervised 62 PhD theses.
He has been invited speaker in more than 200 conferences in Greece and abroad and participated with more than 700 announcements.
